Driving a Sustainable Future with Scalable Spatial ALD

The SparkNano Spatial ALD Hub welcomes nano coating enthusiasts—from R&D experts to industrial manufacturers—to exchange knowledge about Spatial ALD and learn from one another.

We believe Spatial Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) is key to enabling large-scale manufacturing of next-generation devices to accelerate the energy transition toward a cleaner, more sustainable world. Our Hub is open to both experts and novices, offering a platform to discuss scientific publications, cutting-edge applications, and practical experiences to drive Spatial ALD innovation together. By collaborating, we can help researchers and manufacturers achieve the next generation of energy devices that sustain life.

Join Our Expert Webinar

This is why we are excited to invite you to a 60-minute expert webinar, including a live Q&A session, featuring our key experts who will share their insights on achieving this mission together. We invite you to join us for our upcoming expert webinar Tuesday April 15th at 5 PM CET, 11 AM EST and 8 AM PST: Driving a Sustainable Future with Scalable Spatial ALD.

Dr. Jill S. Becker, CEO at SparkNano

Paul Poodt, CTO at SparkNano and Associate Professor at TU Eindhoven

Join us in this informative session where we explore Spatial Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) technology and how it addresses todays energy applications.

The webinar will feature the following:

Introduction to The Webinar

Dr. Jill S. Becker, CEO of SparkNano, will host and kick off the webinar. She will share her vision for enabling ALD to drive sustainable energy solutions and why she chose to join SparkNano in mid-2024. Her background in ALD dates all the way back to her studies. She holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry Harvard University and in 2003 she founded Cambridge NanoTech. Jill scaled the company to over $20M in annual sales before its successful acquisition. Since then, she has taken on multiple leadership roles, always driven by her passion for environmentally conscious technology. In this webinar, she will discuss her commitment to using ALD innovations to tackle some of the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges.

Following her introduction, Jill will welcome Dr. Paul Poodt, Founder & Chief Technology Officer at SparkNano and Associate Professor at TU Eindhoven, to delve into the technology.

Pioneering Scalable Spatial ALD for Today’s Energy Applications

Paul, will discuss the pioneering days of scalable Spatial ALD at TNO, where he developed new processes and equipment for thin-film deposition, focusing on large-area and flexible electronics. His extensive experience includes roles as Program Manager and Senior Scientist at TNO Holst Centre, and next to his role today at SparkNano, he currently serves as parttime Associate Professor at TU Eindhoven, fostering collaborations with emerging talent. He has a Ph.D. in Physics from the Radboud University Nijmegen and 15 years of experience in research organizations and has authored 13 patents. Paul will explain why Spatial ALD is the ideal technique for applying nanoscale coatings in sustainable energy applications, such as:

The Technology Behind Spatial ALD: Deposition Speed, Precision, and Precursor Efficiency

Paul explains that to make this truly sustainable, also the manufacturing methods, like ALD, have to be sustainable. This includes efficient use of resources, minimizing the use of non-sustainable or otherwise critical elements and at high utilization efficiencies of materials. Traditionally, methods like ALD are mainly optimized for film quality, uniformity and costs. As a consequence, many ALD processes have low precursor efficiencies or use precursors that are non-sustainable. We focus on sustainable processes and equipment for sustainable energy applications. He will give some examples, including:

By refining ALD processes and equipment, SparkNano is committed to sustainable energy applications and reducing reliance on critical materials.

The Future of Spatial ALD

Paul will conclude with insights into what’s next for Spatial ALD, exploring new frontiers and potential applications.

Live Q&A Session

The Live Q&A will be moderated by Alexander Bouman, Commercial Director at SparkNano, a seasoned leader in high-tech industries with over 15 years of experience. With a background in energy, advanced materials, and semiconductor technology, Alexander specializes in scaling innovative solutions for hydrogen, battery, display, and solar markets.

We welcome your questions as we work together to achieve large-scale manufacturing of energy applications. Because powerful collaboration is the key to a sustainable future.
