Transforming Green Hydrogen Production with Spatial ALD
At SparkNano, we are tackling some of the most pressing challenges in green hydrogen production, specifically the reliance on highly scarce materials like iridium and platinum. These materials are essential for the operation of electrolysers and fuel cells, but their scarcity and cost pose a significant barrier to scaling up hydrogen production. This is where Spatial ALD technology comes in.
Our innovative approach to Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) enables us to dramatically reduce the amount of iridium and platinum required in PEM electrolysers and power-to-X solutions—key technologies for green hydrogen production. By applying extremely thin catalyst layers with precise material deposition, we reduce iridium usage by up to 40 times, significantly cutting costs and improving the sustainability of hydrogen production.
A Critical Innovation for the Hydrogen Revolution
The world is in need of a rapid transition to sustainable hydrogen and strive to reduce CO2 emissions. Green hydrogen is poised to play a pivotal role in powering transportation, heating, and industrial processes, but to meet the massive demand for green hydrogen—projected to increase by more than 5000x in the next 30 years—innovative and scalable solutions are required.
SparkNano’s Spatial ALD technology is enabling the production of more efficient electrolysers, directly contributing to a cost reduction in hydrogen production while preserving precious metals for other applications. This breakthrough is crucial for the industry’s success, especially in meeting the decarbonization goals necessary for a sustainable energy future.
